Summer Camp Delivers Fun With a Purpose

The camping experience provides more than just fun. Scouts say summer camp offers physically and intellectually challenging activities, new and rewarding experiences, and supportive and caring relationships.

In just one week of camp, youth develop:

  1. Strong personal values and character by participating in thought-provoking activities such as

     
  2. Making decisions
  3. Attending flag ceremonies
  4. Praying
  5. Positive sense of self-worth and usefulness through helping others by

     
  6. Serving meals and cleaning
  7. Communicating positively with others
  8. Expressing their opinions
  9. Leading others in an activity or service
  10. Caring and nurturing relationships with parents, other adults, and peers through group activities with peers and adults they trust as they

     
  11. Mentor other Scouts
  12. Get advice from adults
  13. Form strong friendships
  14. Desire to learn by exploring nature and the environment and

     
  15. Doing things they have never done before
  16. Testing their thinking ability
  17. Earning merit badges
  18. Productive and creative use of time through both physical and intellectual activities as they

     
  19. Work with others on merit badges or tasks
  20. Work on camp improvement projects
  21. Become more self-reliant
  22. Social adeptness through team-building activities, including

     
  23. Meeting new people
  24. Helping others accomplish something
  25. Participating in patrol/troop decision making
  26. Participating in skits or songs

Most important, both boys (78 percent) and parents (96 percent) would recommend the Boy Scout camp they attended to others.

  • Increasing their understanding about youth (82 percent)
  • Learning from other leaders (71 percent).
