Summary

The Circle Ten Council, headquartered in Dallas, Texas, is consistently in the top five of the largest metro councils in the nation classified as a 200. We serve over 70,000 youth and will operate within a $9,200,000 annual budget in 2005. We have a Friends of Scouting net contribution of $2,400,000, which represents 26 percent of our annual income.

The Friends of Scouting brochure we were using prior to 2004 was not impacting our audience in a manner we felt it should. The entire document lacked enthusiasm and directness. The brochure did not represent the attitude or perception we wanted to deliver from our council. It certainly didn't convey to our Scouting families our intentions from a financial standpoint.

Our objective was to have a brochure that represented our council while expressing Scouting's history and heritage in the design as well. The following guidelines were set:

  1. Instill a 1950s look and feel expressing Scouting's history
  2. Contrast with modern designs and pictures
  3. Incorporate Oath and Law
  4. Have easily read and understandable facts and figures
  5. Design user-friendly pledge card for all ages and types of giving

From these guidelines, we created the enclosed Friends of Scouting brochure. The result is a brochure full of life and textured with Scouting's past. It is easily read and offers clear and concise information.

We have experienced new vigor in the family phase of our Friends of Scouting campaign. Our professional staff is excited and proud to use the brochure, and we have had numerous positive comments from our Scouting families. It has given us a professional look while maintaining the values we stand behind in the Boy Scouts of America.

The designing of this brochure brought to my attention how we get caught up in always doing the same thing. Change is essential. Our "new look" has increased our giving, motivated our staff, and caused us to look at other venues that might be ready for a new look. We are looking forward to the opportunities we face in the future.
